Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philhar-monic make their Proms debut with a Russian-flavoured performance featuring Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances, noted for their American jazz influences, and Stravinsky's The Firebird, the folklore-inspired ballet score for Diaghilev's Ballet Russes that helped to make the young composer's name. The orchestra and conductor can be heard again on Saturday, performing Bach's St Matthew Passion. Stephanie Billen
