BRIEF: Closed for the holiday

August 30, 2014

By Jon Pompia, The Pueblo Chieftain, Colo.

Aug. 30--While some people will be working on Labor Day, this federal holiday will see area post offices, banking and financial institutions, public libraries, schools already in session, and city and county government offices closed for business.

All of Colorado's state parks will be open and staffed, but Colorado Parks and Wildlife administrative offices and wildlife service centers will be closed. State troopers will be patrolling the highways and Department of Transportation maintenance crews will be working as necessary.

The Pueblo Mall, as well as local big-box retailers and chain grocery stores, will be open, as Labor Day has for years been a solid day for sales.

Also open will be convenience stores/gas stations and hotels and motels.

Most small or independently owned businesses -- retail, food service, fitness, etc. -- do not traditionally open on Labor Day or do so with limited hours.

As a rule of thumb, some trash collectors who usually conduct pickups on Monday will do so on another day due to the holiday.

City buses will not run on Labor Day.

The Colorado State Fair will be open for its final day of the 2014 run.
