Aug. 03--INDIANAPOLIS -- Lapel's band director Gregory Scott said his band's goal is to entertain and get people out of their seats.

After a fun performance involving dancing and drumming on trash cans at Indiana State Fair Band Day, Scott said the mission was accomplished.

"We try to give people a little exercise by getting up and cheering after sitting down for awhile," Scott said. "Having fun is our biggest priority."

Lapel's performance was Disney-themed, with songs from popular movies such as "Lion King" and "Mary Poppins." During one of the acts, the brass section put down their trumpets and started drumming with the drum line on trash cans to the roar of the crowd.

"That's the first time we've used trash cans," Scott said with a laugh. "But I think it worked out well."

Jacob Hubbard, one of the drum majors for the Marching Bulldogs, said he thought the performance was their best of the season so far. Hubbard was directing for the second half of the performance and said the higher vantage point gave him a better view of how the choreography looked. He said it looked like one of the best run-throughs the band has had.

"There weren't any glaring mistakes," he said. "There's always stuff you can do better, but I think we did well and I'm very confident about the performance."

The soon-to-be senior agreed with the director that having fun is what the band strives for.

"We love to dance around a little bit and get the crowd into it," Hubbard said. "It's nice if we can place well, but our biggest thing is to entertain and I think we accomplished that, too."

He said the fun, crowd-friendly performances are also a way for the band to give back.

"We have a lot of great support from our boosters and parents," Hubbard said. "So it's always fun to do well and entertain."
