August 3, 2014

Albuquerque Journal, N.M.

Aug. 03--Favorite works by Brahms, Mozart, Rachmaninoff and Vivaldi are among the music selections for the four concerts in the 2014-15 season of the New Mexico Symphonic Chorus.

Conducted by Roger Melone, music director, the chorus will be accompanied by a full orchestra in the October, December and the March concerts.

Three of the performances will be held in Albuquerque at the First United Methodist Church, recognized by concert-goers for its great acoustics and convenient parking.

"Performed by our wonderful choral and instrumental musicians, this season -- our fourth -- is sure to please audiences with time-honored works by musical greats," Melone said. "And we're especially excited to perform again at First United Methodist, a perfect venue for the lovely sounds of this music."

To be performed at Popejoy Hall, the "2nd Annual Holiday Festival of Voices" in December again will include the Albuquerque Youth Symphony and Choruses.

"After last year's very successful 'Festival of Voices,' we decided to bring the generations of musicians together again this year for another spirit-lifting holiday concert," said Melone. "We hope our faithful patrons and new friends plan to join us at Popejoy on the evening of Dec. 12 for Vivaldi's spirited Gloria."

The 2014-15 season will launch with the chorus and orchestra performing Mozart's Solemn Vespers and Benjamin Britten's Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 19 at First United Methodist Church.

Immediately following the Oct. 19 concert will be a gala fundraiser for the Chorus at the Artichoke Cafe. Cost will be $95 person for a four-course dinner with wine pairings. Advance reservations are required and may be placed by calling the chorus office at 247-0181.

The second concert of the season will be the "2nd Annual Holiday Festival of Voices" at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 12 at Popejoy Hall.

On Sunday, March 1, the chorus and orchestra will present Schubert's Mass No. 2 in G major, as well as Brahms' radiant Alto Rhapsody and expressive Schicksalslied at the First United Methodist Church.

The chorus will perform Rachmaninoff's Vespers at First United Methodist Church on Sunday, May 3, 100 years after the premiere of the masterwork that Rachmaninoff himself called one of his best.
