In a bid to enable them to light up their homes and charge their smartphones, Schneider Electric is planning to roll out renewable power technology to 20,000 Africans by the end of 2014.

Speaking in South Africa, a senior official of the company said millions of Africans lack access to energy from the national grid.

Putting the majority of the 1.1 billion people in the region in the dark, the World Bank has earlier said 600 million people in African lack access to power.

Hence, Schneider Electric is planning to distributing a device, dubbed as 'Mobiya': a solar lamp and phone charger solution.
