Aug. 29--Students and fans alike can get fired up for the start of football season with live music by Craig Morgan.
The Cowboy Kickoff, today at War Memorial Stadium in Laramie, is hosted by the University of Wyoming. It's meant to double as a welcome party for new and returning students as well as a pep rally for the school's athletics programs.
It is sponsored in part by the Townsquare Media, UW's Residence Life and Dining Services and student programs.
William Evans, the associate director of UW Residence Life, said the event started as part of a four-day push of programs to welcome students to campus. He said it has since grown into a community event with faculty and fans planning on attending.
"We had a similar event at the university I was at before and we wanted to bring that here," he said. "With the new coaching staff and team, it's a great opportunity to create a new tradition and build on the tremendous pride and spirit the community has for the University of Wyoming."
Morgan is known for songs like "That's What I Love About Sunday," "Redneck Yacht Club" and "Bonfire." He is a U.S. Army veteran with six albums to his name. His 2005 album, "My Kind of Livin'," was certified gold in the U.S.
UW's Veteran Services Center is reaching out to veterans across the state to invite them to the concert and a special meet-and-greet session.
Evans said the visitors could expect a full concert experience, with vendors offering food and drink options during the night.
Between the opener and Morgan's set, around 8 p.m., Evans said the school would be hosting a pep rally.
"We are going to have the UW Spirit Squad, Pistol Pete and some of the coaches on hand to talk about their upcoming seasons," he said.
While this is the first year of the event, Evans said he is hoping it will only get bigger with time.
"We are really excited about this and are looking forward to making it a tradition every year from here out," he said.
