Friday Freebies: Free things to do in DFW

Aug. 29--The kids -- and you -- need a break from their first week at school you. Here are some free activities in DFW.

International Observe the Moon Night

The Fort Worth Museum of Science and History is bringing together local Space Science advocates and the Fort Worth Astronomical Society to help the public understand more about the moon. Lunar expert Ken Murphy of The Moon Society will be on hand to answer questions about Moon exploration past, present and future. Plus, learn more about the upcoming eclipses in October 2014.

Good to know: The museum Star Parties are great fun for young astronomers.

When: 6 p.m. to midnight, Saturday, September 6

Bonus tip: It's your last chance to see Indiana Jones and the Adventure of Archaeology exhibit, which runs through Monday, Sept. 1. The interactive exhibit uses the Indiana Jones film series as both a starting point and a backdrop for an exciting and entertaining introduction to the real science of field archaeology. --Everything Energy Fall Concert Series

Celebrate the time off with a weekend of free music each evening at the Levitt Pavilion. Concertgoers can bring children, blankets and lawn chairs, picnics and coolers with drinks that can include beer and wine, so long as there are no glass containers. Mosquito repellent is a good idea.

Last chance to see the Samurai exhibit

Travel back in time and discover the life, culture and pageantry of the revered and feared Japanese samurai warriors through one of the best and largest collections in the world. It is the first exhibition displayed in the new Piano Pavilion.

Good to know: Take your kids 6 and younger to the new play area in the Piano Paviliion -- Studio A. Children ages 5 and younger can enjoy "do-it-together" activities, a well-stocked children's library, and digital interactive stations. Studio A is open during regular museum hours and it's free!

--Last chance to see the World's Largest Dinosaurs exhibit

Your dinosaur crazy kids will get a kick out the exhibit featuring the super-sized sauropods that thrived on Earth for approximately 140 million years.
