On 22nd August, 2014, H.E. Mr. Yang Youming, Chinese Ambassador to Zambia and Mr. Chai Zhijing, Economic and Commercial Counselor of the Chinese Embassy together with H. E. Mr. Guy Scott, Vice President of Zambia, officials from the Ministry of Transport, Works, Supply and Communications, World Bank country representative Kundhavi Kadiresan and representatives from China Henan International Cooperation Limited (CHICO) attended the completion ceremony of Chiawa Bridge.
In his brief remarks at the ceremony, Ambassador Yang congratulated for the successful completion of the project. He said that Zambia had great achievements in maintaining political stability and economic growth, and the existing relations between Zambia and China had potential to grow to benefit both countries.
Vice President Guy Scott expressed gratitude to the Chinese government for encouraging more Chinese enterprises to participate in the infrastructure construction of Zambia. He said that the new bridge would help exploit the development potential in the Zambezi Valley, and would be helpful to improve the lives of the poor people in this region.
Chiawa Bridge spans the Kafue River in the southern Chirundu District, which will serve as the main linkage between the Lower Zambezi and Lusaka, as well as Zambia and other southern African countries. The bridge is 140 meter long and 10.4 meter wide, which was financed by the World Bank, and constructed by CHICO at a cost of US$11.15 million.
