Aug. 27--Country music legend Merle Haggard is performing a Labor Day concert in Crockett.

Piney Woods Fine Arts Association is presenting this concert as its 24th season opener. The show is Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the Crockett Civic Center. Tickets and more information are available at the PWFAA website at or by calling (936) 544-4276.

With 40 No. 1 hits and scores of Top 10 songs, Haggard has won just about every music award imaginable, both as a performer and as a songwriter. In 1994, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Haggard's body of work easily places him beside Hank Williams as one of the most influential artists in country music history.

With No. 1 hits like "Sing Me Back Home" and "Mama Tried," the "Hag" doesn't hide from the fact that he's been to prison. That made him who he is.

"I was bull-headed about my career," Haggard once said. "I didn't want to talk about being in prison, but (Johnny) Cash said I should talk about it. That way the tabloids wouldn't be able to. I said I didn't want to do that and he said, 'It's just owning up to it.'"

When Cash introduced Haggard on his variety show, he said, "Here's a man who writes about his own life and has had a life to write about."

Tickets for Monday's show are on sale now and selling fast.

"We've still got good seats," said Glenn Barnhart, associate producer for the Piney Woods Fine Arts Association.

Tickets start at $52 and are available online at or by calling the Piney Woods Fine Arts Assoc. office at (936) 544-4276 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
