August 28, 2014

POTTSVILLE, Pa., Aug. 28 -- Rep. Matthew Cartwright, D-Pa. (17th CD), issued the following news release:

Today, U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded $48,023 in Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) funds to the West End Fire & Rescue Company in Mahanoy City.

"Congratulations to the all-volunteer West End Fire & Rescue Company for their receipt of this competitive grant," said Rep. Cartwright, a member of the Congressional Fire Services Caucus. "For over a century, the West End has provided an invaluable service to Mahanoy City, protecting the community as was evident by the company's assistance in combatting Tuesday's terrible fire. The community will be better served by the equipment purchased by this AFG award."

The West End Fire & Rescue Company will use the AFG to purchase a variety of rescue equipment, which will replace obsolete gear.

The purpose of the AFG is to award competitive grants directly to fire departments to enhance their ability to protect the health and safety of the public, as well as that of first-responder personnel. Since 2001, AFG has provided approximately $5.6 billion in grants to first-responder organizations to obtain much-needed emergency response equipment, personal protective equipment, firefighting and emergency vehicles, and training.
