France,Nigeria,United States : NIGERIA secures $1b in Funding from WORLD BANK & Other Donors for developing Water Sector across 12 States

The Nigerian Federal Government has made an announcement on its overall receipt of $1 billion worth of grants and loans from numerous global donors to carry out project related to water sector in 12 States across the country.

Addressing a gathering at a recent workshop in Abuja on Performance Assessment, Benchmarking and Government Issues for Urban Water Sector in Nigeria, the Minister of Water Resources - Mrs. Sarah Ochekpe has made this revelation. She has further said that the funding has been offered by the World Bank, African Development Bank, French Development Agency, Islamic Development Bank, European Union and USAID.

Mrs. Ochekpe has revealed that the funding is intended at improving the performances of the State Water Agencies to facilitate sustained delivery of services.

The Nigerian Minister noted, The level of success being recorded in the implementation of the program has given us the confidence to plan and support the process of up-scaling it to cover water supply and irrigation development in additional 12 States and two River Basin Development Authorities. When the on-going processes mature, additional facilities of about one billion dollars will be further sourced from the partners.

Mrs. Ochekpe, who was represented at the occasion by Mr. Daniel Dauda, Director in Permanent Secretary s Office, has pledged for comprehensive support from her Ministry to facilitate successful accomplishment of the goals envisioned in the scheme via monitoring and assessment on a regular basis. The Minister has also directed the Governments of the targeted States in Nigeria to work further proactively via creation and execution of crucial action plans to supplement the accomplishments of sustainable water service delivery to the people of their respective States.

Mrs. Ochekpe stated, The reform program which is performance-driven relies on regular assessment of the State Water Agencies using international performance assessment instruments.
