Aug. 26--WATERLOO -- Waterloo Community Schools started classes last week with more students than a year earlier.

Cora Turner, executive director of student and at-risk services, said the district's first-day enrollment was 9,705. That was 40 more students than the 9,665 who attended on the first day in 2013. School started Aug. 19.

Turner said she is seeing a steady increase in students at the kindergarten and elementary school level in recent years. Overall, "it appears our numbers have gone up approximately 50 to 100 each year" for the last six years.

The district will release a school-by-school breakdown Sept. 2, the day after Labor Day.

The number of students enrolling is likely to continue rising until the official count is taken Oct. 1.

"My expectation would be for it to grow before the official enrollment date," said Turner.
