Aug. 26--BEIRUT -- For a country as small as Lebanon, keeping an eye on its multitude of young fashion designers, with workshops from Dubai to London, can leave one spinning in circles.

Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards offered an example of the influence of Lebanon's younger design houses, as songstresses sidestepped familiar names for gowns by Charbel Zoe and Nicolas Jebran.

Star of the night Beyonce wore a black, long-sleeve gown with spiderweb detail across the bodice by Jebran on the red carpet into the ceremony, held at the Forum in Inglewood, California. She would make a few more wardrobe changes as she was hands down the woman of honor Sunday night. She accepted the Michael Jackson video vanguard award and ended the evening with a whopping 20-minute performance dressed in custom Tom Ford.

Jennifer Lopez gave 27-year-old Charbel Zoe the career boost of a lifetime when she wore a green sparkly creation by the designer at the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup in June. She has proven an enduring -- and powerful -- fan of the young Lebanese dressmaker. Sunday she wore a sparkly silver gown slashed through with flesh-baring cutouts by Zoe.

Dresses by big-name Lebanese designers weren't completely absent. American TV actress Nina Dobrev from "The Vampire Diaries" wore a black and red gown by Zuhair Murad, a regular choice for Hollywood and red carpet affairs.

And on her way out, award in hand, Beyonce wore a burgundy gown with lace side cutouts by red carpet staple, Lebanese designer Zuhair Murad.
