Aug. 24--Forty area residents joined the U.S. military in a rather unique induction ceremony -- before the Toby Keith concert at the Allen County Fair on Saturday.
"It's a great feeling to know they've got our backs," the announcer said after leading the young recruits in a pledge to serve their country.
A new Army inductee, Alanna Sager was very excited to be inducted before the concert. She has listened to country music, and dreamed of joining the Army, for nearly her entire life.
The 18-year-old Apollo Career Center graduate from Wapakoneta will be going to basic training at Fort Leonard Wood. Missouri, for 10 weeks and then train in Virginia for 17 weeks. She will become a power generator equipment repairman after training.
"This is something they will never forget," said Marie Haberstroh, an Army public affairs specialist, also commenting that it was a wonderful experience for the inductees.
Staff Sgt. Brian Barr, of the Air Force, said the induction was an excellent way to show the general public what they're doing.
The ceremony ended with the new military members holding up their hands in a salute to the national anthem.
