PHHS marching band, Directors Jazz Orchestra to perform

Aug. 22--PENDLETON -- Sunday evening is going to be all about the music.

The Pendleton Heights High School Marching Arabians Band and Directors Jazz Orchestra are putting on a show for the community at 6 p.m. Sunday at Falls Park.

The marching band will open with the national anthem before the directors band performs. The high school band will then close with this year's routine, "The Three Apples," director Chris Taylor said.

The routine is about the three apples that have changed the world over the course of time: Eve's apple in the Garden of Eden, the apple that inspired Isaac Newton's theory of gravitation and Apple Inc.

A staff member sparked the idea, and they found music that went with the theme. Taylor said the performance portrays the three inspirations and how they influenced the world, including technological advances and issues.

"In the marching band world, you get a lot of different shows, and then a lot of shows where you see the same thing," Taylor said. "It's a fresh new look and it brings some old and new together, as well."

People can bring their blankets and lawn chairs to the park and just relax.

The concert is an opportunity for the community to listen to both bands and focus on the music, Taylor said. A lot of the audience's attention during football season is focused on the game, and fewer people are willing to travel with the Marching Arabians for their band competitions across the state.

Taylor said the marching band has performed at the start of the school year at Falls Park for about five years. The concert is free, but a portion of money from selling refreshments goes toward funding for the marching band.

It's a helpful way to enjoy cheap, quality entertainment.

"You get a wide variety of music," Taylor said. "... You get the best band for your buck."
