Higher prices boost earnings

GEM Diamonds reported an 87 percent jump in first-half underlying core earnings as it sold more rough stones at higher prices and said it expected prices to remain strong in the second half.

Shares in the mining company, which has operations in Lesotho and Botswana, rose as much as 4 percent yesterday, touching their highest in more than two years.

Gem Diamonds said demand for diamonds was strong at a time of limited growth in supply.
