Aug. 21--Another shop is opening its doors in downtown Kinston.

Buy Local is a combination of art gallery, featuring North Carolina artists, and screenprinting shop.

The store is holding a grand opening party from 6-9 p.m. tonight.

The celebration will include live music, light refreshments and T-shirt printing for children ages 3-10.

T-shirts will be printed with "Good Vibes" and the store's logo, said owner Ben Harper.

"Children can print their own T-shirts that have that design," he said.

Fifty T-shirts will be given away. Parents should accompany their children.

The gallery is in the front part of the store where two North Carolina artists' works will be featured during the event.

John Silver of Manteo -- featured on UNC-TV -- will be available for a meet and greet and showing of his oil paintings.

Ashville resident Alex Matisse -- the grandson of Henri Matisse, a French artist of the 20th century known for painting brilliant colors and free-flowing lines -- will have his pottery on display.

In addition, Harper will display repurposed furniture made from vintage cypress and truck tailgates.

The shop will feature custom-designed screenprinting for businesses and colleges on North Carolina-made T-shirts.

"Buying local clothing is also an option," Harper said. "We just want to be that option in the marketplace so you know where it came from."

A minimum of about 40 shirts is required for custom orders.

Refreshments will include samples of Mother Earth Brewing beer and cookies made by Harper's wife Katherine Harper, who owns A Cookie a Day and sells the treats at the Lenoir County Farmer's Market.

The Ray and Bobby Band will perform. Ray Scott and Bobby Merritt play bluegrass, country rock, beach music and soft rock.

Harper opened Buy Local Collegiate Sportswear on East New Bern Road in November and has moved his screenprinting operation from Carrboro.

The Harpers moved from Durham to Kinston in the summer. They have a daughter, Killen, 9, and son Charles, 5.
