August 20, 2014

Tokyo stocks opened higher Thursday as the U.S. dollar's rise to the upper 103 yen zone gave a boost to export-oriented high-tech and automaker shares.

In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 81.02 points, or 0.52 percent, from Wednesday to 15,535.47. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 5.89 points, or 0.46 percent, at 1,285.53.

Besides exporters, major gainers included consumer finance, rubber products and brokerage shares.
