Aug. 20--A news conference scheduled by singer-songwriter David Frizzell instead was transformed into a mini-concert Tuesday afternoon at the Buddy Holly Center's Gallery, 1801 Crickets Ave.

The highlight might very well have been Frizzell's first live performance of "Maria Elena," a song he had been commissioned to write for the December birthday of the widow of the late Buddy Holly.

Backed by rhythm guitarist Eddie Huston and vocalist Stacy Huston, Frizzell also debuted the official "Buddy Holly guitar" sent to him by the Buddy Holly Educational Foundation.

"I think they thought I was just a friend when we started this project," Frizzell said.

"Now they feel I'm another ambassador for the memory of Buddy."

It was this foundation that asked him to write the song for Maria Elena Holly, and which then agreed to produce Frizzell's current project.

Credited to Frizzell & Friends, the project is a CD called "Buddy Holly Country Tribute: Remember Me."

Performing on the same CD with Frizzell are Merle Haggard, Helen Cornelius, Jimmy Fortune, T. Graham Brown and Sonny Curtis.

The CD was supposed to officially debut Sept. 7, that date commemorating what would have been Holly's 78th birthday, had he not perished in the crash of a private aircraft on Feb. 3, 1959.

However, before heading home to Nashville with his family and crew aboard a tour bus, Frizzell made certain to stock the gift shop at the Buddy Holly Center with copies of the CD, each recording also including a "Making Of" DVD, which provides 70 minutes of footage of the CD being made.

Frizzell also performed "Remember Me," and "That'll Be the Day."

Before leaving, Frizzell made time to sign books and recordings brought by fans.

He appeared to have a good time remembering not only his earlier visits to Lubbock, but also his teenage years spent traveling with and opening concerts headlined by his legendary brother, singer-songwriter Lefty Frizzell.
