Emeritus Faculty Member to Discuss Local Historic Sites

August 17, 2014

MARYVILLE, Mo., Aug. 17 -- Northwest Missouri State University issued the following news release:

Tom Carneal, faculty emeritus at Northwest Missouri State University and former museum curator for the Nodaway County Historical Society, will share his research about Maryville's historic homes and sites during a presentation at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 24.

The program at the Nodaway County Historical Society museum, 110 N. Walnut in Maryville, is free and refreshments will be served.

Carneal will discuss local sites that are on the National Register of Historic Places as well as homes that were not nominated for the National Register and sites that no longer exist.

Carneal has been instrumental in researching and writing National Register nominations for northwest Missouri. The sites accepted to the register include courthouses in several surrounding counties, a historic district in St. Joseph, as well as a historical inventory of sites in the counties of the Platte Purchase.

The Northwest campus features two structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Carneal's research of the Thomas Gaunt House, which was built in 1870 and serves as the University president's residence, led to its addition to the registry in 1979. Also, in August 2010, Northwest's Administration Building, which was completed in 1910, was added to the National Register as the culmination of research conducted by Northwest graduate student Jason Williamson.

The Nodaway County Historical Society is devoted to preserving the past in order to build its future. The Historical Society has an array of artifacts related to the towns, businesses, organizations and the people comprising Nodaway County. It welcomes visitors between 1 and 4 p.m., Tuesdays through Fridays and other days by appointment.
