Aug. 02--The Owensboro Black Expo will host an outdoor festival 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, at Dugan Best Recreation Center, 1003 Omega St.

Linda Board, assistant treasurer of the Black Expo Board said the free event will feature a bounce house for children, games for children and adults, a performance by Musick Dance Studios at 4:30 p.m., a live band starting about 7 p.m. and three-on-three basketball competition as well as food and more.

"It should be a wonderful, great, entertaining evening for the entire family," Board said.

The Owensboro Black Expo week, originally scheduled for the week of July 6, was postponed because of a death in the community.

According to Board, they've altered their calendar to "ensure we get all activities in" throughout the year.

The Miss Black Expo pageant will be Dec. 6 at the Owensboro Convention Center.

While final details are still being determined, other activities planned throughout the year include a September meet-and-greet for the entire community to learn more about the Expo and its mission; "Careers on Wheels," and Taste of Fall and a mini-art exhibit in October; and a one-day conference in November.

According to Board, the Black Expo has given away more than $40,000 in scholarship funds over the years.

Activities they offer are "designed for the betterment of the community," enabling all cultures to know one another, she said.

"We welcome and want the entire community to attend our events," said Board.

They welcome new members and new ideas.

"We want to move forward in a way that promotes sensitivity and cultures, promotes unity in the entire community, promotes education of young people," she said. "In order to do that, we all have to work together."
