Nikkei marks slight gain, up for 8th straight day on weaker yen

August 19, 2014

Tokyo stocks ended choppy trading Wednesday almost flat, with the Nikkei stock index marking a slight gain to stretch its winning streak to an eighth trading day, as buying triggered by the U.S. dollar's rise to the 103 yen zone offset selling after a seven-day rally.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended up 4.66 points, or 0.03 percent, from Tuesday at 15,454.45. By contrast, the broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 0.65 point, or 0.05 percent, lower at 1,279.64.

Major gainers included marine transport and services shares, while consumer finance and insurance shares lost ground.
