Municipal Court to get $256K hardware upgrade

Aug. 20--SPRINGFIELD -- The city of Springfield will spend approximately $265,000 to upgrade computer equipment hardware at the Clark County Municipal Court.

City commissioners were expected to approve the contract with Columbus-based Mapsys, Inc. during their regular meeting Tuesday evening. The contract is being paid out of the Municipal Court Improvements fund.

The current hardware is approximately 4 years old, said Clerk of Courts Guy Ferguson.

"It allows us to stay on the edge of technology," Ferguson said. "We're one of the few offices that makes everything available online."

The upgrades are expected to be completed by late November, according to the legislation. The equipment includes personal computers, desktop scanners, servers and storage space, as well as installation services.

As the current equipment gets older, maintenance costs continue to rise, Ferguson said.

"We'll save money on our maintenance costs," Ferguson said.

The clerk's office has 20 employees, Ferguson said.

Computerized court records go back to 1990 and are located on the court's website. All images for a case, such as arrest reports and dispositions, are located in the database, which is running 24 hours per day, seven days per week.

"That just keeps growing," Ferguson said. "You need more disk space to accommodate that."

The Clerk of Court's website has received over two million hits since 2000, he said.

"We're definitely proud of it," Ferguson said. "It's a good system and we really don't get any complaints. The users seem to be really happy with what we make available."
