August 18, 2014

WELLFLEET, Mass., Aug. 18 -- The National Park Service'sCape Cod National Seashore issued the following news release:

History is full of the stories of the captains of America's great clipper ships, but the tales of the women and children who sometimes sailed with them are rarely heard. Join storyteller Joan Gatturna as she tells their stories in a performance of Petticoats At Sea at 7 PM on Tuesday, August 26 at Salt Pond Visitor Center in Eastham.

Ms. Gatturna will appear in 19th-century costume and will portray Johanna Sears Burgess, a character representative of the girls and women who experienced both the romance and perils of life at sea alongside their husbands and fathers. "Johanna" will relate the story of her first journey to China and how it led to a life of seafaring for her and her children. The story is based on the true adventures of several Cape Cod and New England women.

Joan Gatturna is the creator of Petticoat Adventures, a series of programs about remarkable American women. She has entertained audiences throughout New England at museums, schools and historic sites. She holds an advanced degree from Simmons College where she studied the art of storytelling and is on the Artist Roster of both the Massachusetts Cultural Council and the New England Foundation For the Arts as well as the New Hampshire Humanities Council 'History to Go' roster.
