Aug. 18--Passengers taking a Delta flight from Montgomery now have the option of skipping the check-in line.
The Delta cell phone app will let Montgomery Regional Airport fliers check in up to 24 hours in advance and have their boarding pass emailed or texted to their device. Passengers can then skip the downstairs check-in line and go straight to TSA security screening, with the electronic pass displayed on their phone and their identification in hand.
Fliers can show the pass again at the gate to board the plane.
It works with Apple, Android and Windows phones.
The electronic boarding pass option came out of conversations with Delta about how to improve service, said Chip Gentry, the airport's vice president of air service development.
"This is really big for Montgomery," Gentry said. "If you look at the list of cities (with this service), it's much larger cities."
One of the Montgomery Regional Airport's biggest selling points has been its speedy, easy check-in process, which allows people to arrive later than at some bigger air hubs. Gentry said the new service makes that process even faster and easier, though he cautioned that there's still a "hard cut-off" of 30 minutes before takeoff.
"It helps if you're running late, but you don't want to push it too much," he said.
The Delta app offers other options for Montgomery flights as well, including changing seating assignments.
"We are working to make the travel experience less stressful and more enjoyable and feel that this will make a significant positive impact on the customer experience," Gentry said.
