Aug. 15--MT. VERNON --

Cedarhurst Center for the Arts will host the 25th Annual Gathering of the Quilts exhibit starting this Sunday with public viewing hours from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The exhibit runs until Oct. 19.

"This is a special year for this exhibit, this is the 25th anniversary," said Carrie Gibbs, director of the Shrode Art Center.

Gibbs said the Cedarhurst Quilters Club has been meeting once a month at the art center and has been together for more than 25 years.

"The Annual Gathering of Quilts is a way for the group to showcase their works and talents that they have made in this past year," Gibbs said. Each year, there are different quilts hung in the show.

Gibbs said the Cedarhurst Quilters tend to make work that is more time-honored and based off the traditional quilt patterns.

"The title of the main gallery exhibit is 'Playing with the Classics' that are the traditional quilt block patterns that are hundreds of years old," Gibbs said. "A Cedarhurst quilter made a 25th anniversary quilt for the exhibit and it's hung up right as you come into the museum."

Gibbs said there are 25 blocks on the quilt and each block is an example of the traditional patterns.

Gibbs said the museum has plans to make the 25th anniversary celebration unique.

"What Cedarhurst is doing to celebrate the milestone is our curator, Rusty Freeman, has collaborated with the curator at the National Quilt Museum, Judy Schwender, and she will visit Cedarhurst to give a gallery talk during Thursday Night Live on Aug. 21," Gibbs said.

Cedarhurst has borrowed quilts from the National Quilt Museum, which is based in Paducah, Ky., to showcase during the event.

"These are international prize-winning quilts that will be in the main gallery and this is not what you would think of when you think of a quilt. These are feats of craftsmanship, conceptually, and each one of them are absolutely stunning," Gibbs said.

Gibbs expressed excitement about the quilts visiting from the National Quilt Museum because this is the first time those quilts have ever been taken to another museum.

A preview reception for the quilt exhibit for Cedarhurst members will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

Preview admission for non-members is $5 per person. Admission is free once the exhibit showing starts.

Quilts from the exhibit will be displayed in the Regenhardt Gallery at the Shrode Art Center and at the Beal Grand Corridor Gallery inside the Mitchell Museum.

In addition to the Annual Gathering of the Quilts, Cedarhurst will also host the Quilters' Bed Turning Program at 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 24 in the Performance Hall.
