Aug. 15--MCALESTER -- CultureFest, McAlester's annual one-day festival to celebrate cultural diversity, is set for 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. Saturday along Choctaw Avenue in downtown McAlester.

Various types of music will be featured, including bluegrass, Latin, and jazz. In addition, the festival features belly dancers and hula dancers, as well as gypsy dancers from an Oklahoman dance company.

This year's lineup includes many performers from Oklahoma, including local musicians from the McAlester area such as the Sunset Band, the Earthtones, and the Smokin' Joe and the Blue Western Scramble.

Representing the Choctaw Nation, Choctaw dancers are also set to participate in the event.

United Freestyle Stunt Team will perform tricks and jumps during CultureFest. McAlester Main Street will offer a special activity for children who can get a passport and "travel" to participating stores on Choctaw Avenue to get their passports stamped during Saturday's event.

Vendors and information booths will be at the event for those interested in food, drinks, clothing, accessories, and other items. A popular vendor among attendees last year, Hartshorne's Poor Boyz BBQ, will serve up local cuisine while other booths like African Arts will sell statues, masks, and jewelry, according to organizers of the event.
