Aug. 14--DIXON -- Dixon Main Street and Riverfront will host Venetian Night on Aug. 23 along the riverfront, in celebration of the fifth anniversary of the riverfront and Heritage Square.
The event will begin at 5 p.m. Organizers are hoping to bring a European flavor to the riverfront, with roaming musicians, artists and street performers. Admission is free.
There will be face-painting for kids and a mask workshop led by Jeff Semmerling, master mask-maker from Chicago. Space is limited, and tickets are $10 in advance for the workshop. For those who want reserved seating, champagne reception tickets are $25.
The night also will include a lighted boat parade at sundown. The parade will circle between the Peoria and Galena Avenue bridges. Boaters can still register for free for the parade. They are encouraged to decorate their vessels and may launch them anywhere below the Dixon Dam and meet the guide at 7:30 p.m. near Page Park.
Dave Druen, from Dave's Outdoor World in Sterling, will lead a kayak and canoe parade before the lighted boat parade.
Dixon Main Street and Riverfront will award $100 to the best-decorated boat. Moonlight Bay, which will host a parade pre-party, has donated gift cards to be awarded to boaters.
There will be a silent auction of Venetian masks decorated by local artists for Second Saturdays. The event will end with a fireworks show.
