Sound Bank opens branch in New Bern

Aug. 14--Sound Bank will open its newest full service branch Friday at the 1801 South Glenburnie Road location of recently acquired Vantage South Bank.

"Sound Bank looks forward to bringing its brand of full service community banking to New Bern," said Phil Collins, president and CEO, when making the announcement.

Carteret County-based Sound Bank has received regulatory approval to acquire most of the loans and deposits of Vantage South Bank as well as the real property and branch building.

"We have an existing loan production office in Craven County and the acquisition of this branch accelerates our long-term plan to open a full service office in New Bern," he said. "We will work hard to make the transition as smooth as possible for our new customers."

Vantage South Bank Branch Manager Liz Garner will remain as branch manager.

New Bern native Mark Gatlin, recently promoted to Craven County market executive by Collins, will be moving his office to the South Glenburnie Road location and will oversee all of Sound Bank'sCraven County operations.

A 1988 UNC-Wilmington economics graduate with a concentration in finance, Gatlin is a graduate of the North Carolina School of Executive Management at Chapel Hill and has 25 years banking experience, including 20 years in New Bern.

Gatlin opened the New Bern loan production office in 2005, and Collins said he "has made excellent progress in this market. I look forward to watching our growth in Craven County under Mark's guidance."

The bank plans to retain all current employees of the New Bern office.

After the soft opening this week, promotional events and a Sept. 17 ribbon cutting and pig picking planned are scheduled.

Locally owned and with assets of more than $135 million, Sound Bank is a community bank headquartered in Morehead City which opened in 2001. It now has full-service offices in Morehead City, Beaufort and Cedar Point, and loan production offices in New Bern and Jacksonville.
