ArtSpace nets large grant from Arts Council

Aug. 14--LIMA -- ArtSpace/Lima will have a somewhat larger financial cushion after receiving its largest grant ever from the Ohio Arts Council.

The gallery received a grant of $12,083 from the council's Sustainability Grants Program, a grant designed to help state art-centric organizations pay for operational expenses. Any recipient must be a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization that produces high-quality arts programs.

"I was delighted to have it," ArtSpace operations manager Bill Sullivan said. "I think the Ohio Arts Council recognizes the value of this organization to this community and wants to help."

This is not the first time that the local gallery has received grant money from the Ohio Arts Council, but Sullivan was not expecting a grant of this magnitude.

"We've received Ohio Arts Council grants now for at least the past seven or eight years," he said. "This, however, is the largest by a factor of two or three."

This is also not the last time that ArtSpace will benefit from the council's generosity, according to Sullivan. He said another substantial grant will be coming next year.

"I was very, very pleased with their decision," he said. "They've already decided on next year's budget, and we'll be getting $10,000."

Sullivan already has plans for the funds, with much of it pegged to help with behind-the-scenes expenses.

"Most of the money will be parceled out to administration, exhibits and to our fairly substatial print budget," he said. "We do a newsletter and postcards with announcements of shows. Although we try to use the Internet as much as possible since it's free, nevertheless the print budget is still sizeable, and some of the money will go to that."
