Heritage Commission Awards History Grants

August 11, 2014

MORRISTOWN, N.J., Aug. 11 -- Morris County issued the following news release:

Five Morris County organizations were selected to receive grants from funds awarded to the Morris County Heritage Commission through this year's New Jersey Historical Commission's General Operating Support Grant Program.

The re-grant program is a vital part of the Heritage Commission's mission to serve the public, said Peg Shultz, the commission's archivist and acting director.

Over the 13-year history of the program, grant awards have funded a variety of projects ranging from the printing of publications and the conservation of documents to history programs and equipment and projects to provide greater access to historic sites and collections and expand the visitor base, Shultz said.

"Without the financial support from the re-grant program, Morris County history organizations would not have been able to afford these projects," said Shultz.

Re-grant funding for 2014 has been awarded to the following organizations:

* Kinnelon Historical Commission received $2,284 for brochures and way-finding materials for the Pathways of History program.

* Morris County Tourism Bureau received $2,665 to print brochures for the Revolutionary Times and New Jersey 350th anniversary programs.

* The Morris Museum received$4,000 to develop an on-line exhibit which will focus on its fashion collection.

* Mt. Tabor Historical Society received $3,935 for general operating support.

* Wharton Borough received $5,000 to replace interpretive signs along the Morris Canal Greenway for general operating support.

The commission has applied to the New Jersey Historical Commission for General Operating Support to continue the re-grant program in 2015. If the commission is successful, the announcement and application materials will be posted on the Heritage Commission website, http://morriscountynj.gov/mchc/.

The Morris County Heritage Commission strives to assist its constituents and enrich the lives of the public by preserving the historical record and advancing interest in, and awareness of Morris County's and New Jersey's past.
