Turkmenistan marks National Melon Day

The capital city of Ashgabat held the celebrations dedicated to Turkmenistan's national holiday of Melon Day, the reports today.

President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov has congratulated the people on the event.

"As the history shows, the fame of the Turkmen melons, which have long ago become delicacies and decoration of the most generous tables, has been spreading around the world since the Middle ages," President Berdimuhamedov said in his congratulatory message.

The celebrations included the concert program with the participation of music and dance bands of Turkmenistan.

The noble melon growers were presented valuable gifts on behalf of the President of Turkmenistan.

In honor of the national holiday, all the cities and villages of Turkmenistan hosted conferences, art exhibitions and colorful fairs, concerts, theatrical performances, sports events, and other.

The national holiday is marked annually in Turkmenistan in order to praise the Turkmen melon for its aroma, taste and large size. It takes place on the second Sunday in August. This year, the celebration was held on August 10.
