Stomp grapes at Lakeridge to benefit Boys & Girls Club

Aug. 12--Lakeridge Winery and Vineyards' 20th annual Harvest Grape Stomp is this weekend at the winery, 19239 U.S. Highway 27, south of Clermont.

Anyone willing to take off their shoes and stomp out the juice of large squishy grapes inside a pit can participate at one of several grape-stomping competitions during the two-day event. Winners of each two-minute timed stomp-off will receive a prize.

The event also will feature children activities including bounce houses, live music, complimentary winery tours and wine tasting. Wine, beer and a variety of food and soft drinks will be available for purchase.

The Ladyz & The Boyz will entertain from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday and the Nightly Blues from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday's performances will include the Selwyn Birchwood Band from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and Bobby Blackmon and The B3 Blues Band from 2 to 5 p.m. A solo performance by Mark Clermont will be featured from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday in the hospitality cellar on the second floor of the wine shop.

Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Admission is a $2 donation to benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Lake and Sumter Counties. Seating is limited, patrons can bring a lawn chair or blanket.

Superintendent forum

Superintendent Susan Moxley will hold her second "Innovation Exchange" open forum from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Eustis Community Center, 601 Northshore Drive.

Moxley will provide updates and insights about Lake schools and is an opportunity for attendees to exchange ideas and talk about challenges the discrict faces.

Splash Park closed for maintenance

The children's Splash Park at Wooton Park, 100 E. Ruby St. in Tavares is closed today and Tuesday for maintenance. The park will reopen on Wednesday.

Chamber business breakfast

The Mount Dora Area Chamber of Commerce's August Business at Breakfast will take place from 7:15 to 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Lakeside Inn, 100 N. Alexander St., Mount Dora.

Breakfast sponsor is Sugar Toes Ice Cream Pedicures. Amy Johnson and Marylynn Olds will speak on the topic "Health issues related to pedicures and why we are different."

Cost is $10 with reservations and $12 without reservations.

Widowed persons luncheon

LIFE, a social-support group for widowed persons, will have a combined luncheon of its Leesburg, Tavares and The Villages group at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Leesburg Community Building, 109 E. Dixie Ave.

Bingo will be provided following the luncheon. Members are encouraged to bring a white elephant type gift -- new or used -- to supplement the cache of prizes.

Hurricane-ready program

A hurricane-preparedness program will be presented by Spencer Kostus, disaster assistance specialist for Lake County Emergency Management, at 2 p.m. Thursday at Marion Baysinger Memorial Library, 756 W. Broad St. in Groveland.

Some of the topics will include weather terminology, hurricane forecasting, emergency supply kits, evacuation and emergency contingency planning.

In addition, attendees can obtain brochures such as Disaster Supply Checklist, Hurricane Fact Sheet 2014, Weather Radios: An All-Hazards Warning System, Creating a Family Disaster Plan, Lake County Special Needs Program and AlertLake -- an automated phone-warning system.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration weather radios will be given away as door prizes.

Hurricane season runs through Nov. 30.

Estate planning, elder law

A free educational seminar on estate planning and elder law is 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday in Room 108 at Cooper Memorial Library, 2525 Oakley Seaver Drive, Clermont.

Attorneys Justin Brick and Beth Waddell will present the program, which will include living trusts, wills, durable power of attorney, health-care surrogate, pre-need guardian designations, and protecting your family's assets from costly assisted living and nursing home care.

Political Hob Nob

Leadership Lake County is sponsoring its biannual Political Hob Nob during which voters can mingle with candidates and take part in a straw poll on Thursday.

The event is set for 5 to 8:30 p.m. in the Magnolia Room at Lake-Sumter State College's Leesburg campus, 9501 U.S. Highway 441.

Candidates meet with voters and hand out campaign materials during the hob nob. The straw poll for political races is a popular feature.

Leadership officials expect more than 25 candidates, who are running for school board, city, county, state and federal races. Officials also expect to attract more than 500 people.

Beverages and a cash bar will be hosted by the Leesburg Partnership.

Tickets are $12 and include a barbecue dinner and straw-poll ticket. Tickets can be purchased at the Lake Eustis Chamber of Commerce or at the door.
