When paired with the stylish, improved $129.99 Type cover, the Surface Pro 3 is a do-everything, go-anywhere device that fully realizes Microsoft's vision for the Surface program.

Apple MacBook Pro

w/ Retina

Price:$2,599–$2,799 MSRP

Type:Traditional laptop

•Better battery life than

most laptops this powerful

•Extremely thin with

a stunning display

•Class-leading performance

Summary: Apple's updated Macbook Pro lineup is something special: remarkably powerful internal components, a 15-inch Retina display, and a body barely thicker than most ultra-portable laptops. Though gamers and video editors will want to nab the extra Nvidia graphics card, the base-level Intel Iris Pro graphics are truly a generational leap forward and give you better battery life, too.

Asus Zenbook UX301LA-DH71T

Price:$1,799–$2,199 MSRP

Type: Ultrabook

•Very good battery life

•Portable, lightweight

•Excellent keyboard,

Gorilla Glass display

Summary: Putting the "Ultra" in "Ultrabook," the Zenbook UX301LA-DH71T crams a lot of computer into a wafer-thin package. As portable as it is powerful, this laptop weighs in at under three pounds. It provides flagship-level performance, and it still gives you battery life to survive cross-country flights.

Price:$1,699.99 MSRP

Type: Gaming

• Powerful gaming-ready hardware

• Poor battery life

• Lightweight for

a gaming rig

Summary:Gamers have tons of options when it comes to customizing their desktop rigs -- though "arming them to the teeth" may be more appropriate. But for gamers on the go, sometimes a laptop is in order. The MSI GS60 Ghost costs under $1,700, but it's actually among the more affordable gaming laptops on the market. It's also thin and lightweight, though iffy battery life restricts portability.
