Aug. 12--CHESAPEAKE -- The school division plans to allow elementary school students to bring electronic devices into the classroom, starting this fall.

The division is expanding a program that allows the use of iPads, smartphones and other tools for educational purposes. It started for high school students last fall and was opened to middle schoolers a few months later.

The use of such tools is gaining traction in a growing number of divisions. Suffolk and Virginia Beach also have allowed them in recent years.

The School Board gave its approval Monday night. Chairwoman Christie New Craig said the program has been successful in helping keep students engaged.

"It's the wave of the future," Craig said.
