Aug. 01--The Regatta at Lake Arthur, Aug. 2-3, includes kayaking, Hoola Hoop-ing, a nature cruise, children's activities, live music and food and crafts vendors as well as Post-Gazette Family Fishing with outdoors editor John Hayes. Tackle and bait provided, no license necessary. Free admission and parking 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.Aug. 2, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.Aug. 3. South Shore, Moraine State Park, Butler County. Details at www.lakearthurregatta.org.

Lake Erie and tributaries (Erie County): Winds blew up 3- to 5-foot waves, but fish were found between the rollers. Despite Thursday's rough water, the Edward John head boat located yellow perch and silver bass at 58 feet -- 27 anglers landed 260 perch and twice as many silvers. Before the rains, big catfish were taken at the mouth of Elk Creek and shore anglers caught perch and bass at Presque Isle Bay.

Lake Wilhelm (Mercer County): Nice walleye and hand-size crappies were taken near the dam, and bass were caught throughout the lake. The Fish and Boat Commission and Goddard State Park will hold a free Family Fishing program 4-7 p.m.Aug. 10. Includes gear, knots, casting and fishing. Equipment and live bait provided, no license necessary. Registration required and accepted through Aug. 10 at www.fishandboat.com. Details 814-683-5126.

French Creek (Venango County): Walleye catches were up, catfish hookups were down following recent rains. Fish and Boat noted large numbers of suckers at the mouth of Sugar Creek and heavy pressure from anglers targeting them with live bait and heavy tackle.

Lake Arthur (Butler County): The new dimensions of the Swamp Run wildlife propagation area open substantial new opportunities for anglers. Now limited to the back of the finger and marked with "Keep Out" buoys, the restricted area provides for a small part of Lake Arthur where nature can run its course without human impact. Fish and Boat reports that the stump-ridden waters opened in recent weeks provided "fantastic fishing," with channel cats and crappies taking minnows under bobbers. Walleye were caught during by day off the North Shore's Nealey Point -- anglers threw crankbaits or drifted worm harnesses over the drop-off.

Thorn Run Reservoir (Butler County): Bass took worms and live minnows in late afternoon and evening.

Pine Creek (Allegheny County): On July 25, Everett Anderson, 4, of Downington, Pa., and his grandfather Dave Anderson of Allison Park caught about 15 smallmouths up to 12 inches and a 15-inch sucker pitching red worms with ultra-light spinning gear.

Monongahela, Youghiogheny rivers (Allegheny County): Few big catfish were reported in recent weeks.

Donegal Lake (Westmoreland County): Catfish were taken at night. Day anglers reported largemouths and crappies.

Keystone Lake (Westmoreland County): Around dusk and dawn, largemouths were hooked near shore under overhanging brush.

Laurel Hill Creek (Somerset County): Low and clear, but one spin fisherman using small plastic worms released seven trout near the scout camps -- three were in the 12-inch range.

Cross Creek Lake (Washington County): Last week, while trolling a chartreuse Hot 'n Tot, Quinton Wimbs of McKees Rocks boated a 24-inch, 8-pound bass. Anglers caught crappies jigging in 10 to 20 feet near drop-offs and weed beds. Bluegills were in shallow coves or suspended in deeper waters -- anglers found big-fillet bluegills in 8 to 15 feet. Bass took watermellon-color plastic worms.

Monongahela River (Washington and Greene counties): Largemouths fed on smaller fish attacking mayfly hatches.

Vacation catch: Max McKitrick, 14, of Bethel Park boated many smallmouth bass while fishing in Lake Erie out of Buffalo with Captain Tim Braun of Braun's Outdoors.
