BRIEF: SCANA profits surge on hot-weather electric sales

July 31, 2014

July 31--Hot summer weather propelled SCANA Corp. to 13 percent higher earnings during the Cayce-based utility's second quarter.

The investor-owned company earned $96 million during the April through June period, or 68 cents per share. That compares to $85 million or 60 cents per share for the second quarter of 2013 for the parent company of South Carolina Electric & Gas Co.

"Second-quarter results improved principally due to weather-related electric sales,"

said Jimmy Addison, executive vice president and chief financial officer.

SCE&G serves about 684,000 electric customers and approximately 332,000 natural gas customers. About half of those are in the Charleston region.
