Wind Symphony begins search for new director

July 09--The Portsmouth Wind Symphony (PWS) has begun the process of searching for a new conductor for its 22nd season.

According to information released by the symphony, "current conductor Lee Auer assumed the PWS conducting position in May of 2013, (Auer) is leaving the Lucasville Valley School District for a new music education position in Newark, Ohio."

Because of Auer's departure from the area, the PWS Board of Trustees has issued a formal announcement of the position of conductor/music director.

Minimum qualifications for the position include, a bachelor's degree in music education. performance, conducting or a related field and experience as a teacher in music education and applicants must be able to perform on a wind or percussion instrument. According to the job description some of the primary responsibilities of the position include, conducting weekly rehearsals and at least three performance of the PWS.

Those interested in the position are also being asked send a CD or DVD of recent conducting performances and rehearsals.

The first performance of the Portsmouth Community Orchestra was in July 1993. Adam and Mary Crane under the sponsorship of the Southern Ohio Museum and Cultural Center founded the Portsmouth Community Orchestra in the spring of 1993. The ensemble became the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra in 2002, and was later renamed the Portsmouth Wind Symphony.

The Portsmouth Community Chorale, founded by Charles Varney in 1994, and is currently under the direction of Justin Wiget.
