Rockumentary Season 4: Stones, Clapton and more

July 9, 2014

July 09--Justin Ploof notes that his band's popular Rockumentary series often is described as a multimedia experience. He says it's more like a "documentary with a live band playing the soundtrack."

Indeed, the Justin Ploof and the Throwbacks' shows combine songs from a chosen band (or era) with video archives interspersed with facts about the music. "We're literally building the show from top to bottom," Ploof said.

Ploof plays with his brother, Jason, and his father, Dan, and assorted musicians back them up. Past shows have covered the music of the Beatles, Bob Dylan, the Monkees and more.

The nostalgic music connects with the audience, Justin Ploof said, and "video can bring people right back to that moment" when they first heard the song or saw the image.

Season tickets are on sale for the fourth season of the series, which is at Pioneer Place on Fifth. Among the shows:

--The Rolling Stones (Oct. 1-3). Justin Ploof noted this show is a repeat from the first season of Rockumentary; they got so many requests for another performance they brought it back. "Obviously, the band has been around for 50 years, so you have quite a selection to choose from," he said.

--Crossroads: The Eric Clapton Story (Feb. 25-27).

--Teenage Idol: The Ricky Nelson Story (April 1-3). Ploof says a recent Bobby Vee tribute show he did in Little Falls got him thinking about music from this era and musicians similar to Central Minnesota's Vee.

--American Bandstand: Dick Clark's '60s Dance Party (May 13-15). This show is expected to feature music from the Turtles, the Kingsmen and more, and include information about Clark.

As for a fifth season of Rockumentary? Justin Ploof said at the end of a series, the group makes a long list of suggestions for upcoming shows. Some future possibilities: Huey Lewis and the News, or a tribute to the great teen idols of the '50s and '60s, he says.
