July 09--Appetite for Deception will bring the heavy metal sound of Guns N' Roses to Kennewick on July 12 for a concert in the parking lot of the Clover Island Inn.

Mark Thomas, the band's lead singer, said in an email that he answered an advertisement five years ago for auditions for a lead singer for Guns N' Roses-type quartet but had no idea it was for a tribute band.

"I wasn't shopping for a tribute band to perform in," he said. "I knew I had the (Axl Rose) range to sing some of their songs well, so I thought I'd give it a try."

Thomas calls himself Axl M, and the rest of his band is identified as BC Slash on lead guitar, Mike "Izzy" Stradlin on rhythm guitar, Wade McKagan on bass and Andrew Sorum on drums.

They all live and breathe the music of Guns N' Roses, Thomas said.

The quintet is an Oregon-based band with most living in Portland. Thomas lives in Salem.

"We rehearse in Portland during the week," he said. "Salem is only an hour away from Portland, so the drive isn't too much of a strain."

And when he isn't touring with the band, he's catching up on some college courses and usually has classes and homework to deal with.

"As long as the fans want to see the best of Guns N' Roses, we'll continue to give it to them," Thomas said.

Opening for Appetite for Deception will be Tri-City band Groove Principal.

Showtime for the 21 and older concert is 7 p.m. Tickets cost $15 in advance or $20 at the gate. Hotel packages that include overnight accommodations and the concert cost $109 for two. Advance tickets are available at the hotel front desk.

Other summer concerts at the hotel include Helles Belles on Aug. 1 and Starship with Mickey Thomas on Aug. 2.
