Downtown Mount Dora will showcase works of art

July 07--"Florida Forever," the third annual showing of Florida-themed artwork, will kick off with a free reception from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Artisans on Fifth, an artists' cooperative-gallery shop at 134 E. Fifth Ave. in Mount Dora.

The show will feature the works of the co-op's 22 members in a variety of mediums from sculptures to paintings to jewelry. All of the artists live and work in Central Florida.

"Forever Florida" will run through July 31.

Refreshments will be served.

The event will coincide with the Mount Dora Second Friday Art Stroll. Visitors can take a walking tour of downtown Mount Dora and view regional art while listening to music from 6 to 8 p.m. Dozens of artists will be selling their works at designated venues.

Some of the venues will feature beverages and hors d'oeuvres.

Maps will be available at participating locations.

'First Ladies, Ladies First'

The Bayview Theater Group will present the musical comedy "First Ladies, Ladies First" at 2:30 p.m.July 24 and 26 in the main dining room at Bayview Center, an elder-care-services facility at 301 S. Bay St. in Eustis.

Some of the residents will portray first ladies of the United States including Martha Washington, Mary Todd Lincoln and Barbara Bush.

The performance is free and open to the public.

Scholarship winners

The Ocala Civic Theatre and Act 4 has awarded more than $119,500 in college scholarships to Marion County students majoring in the performing arts since the program was established in 1981.

This year, the theater provided a total of $9,400 in scholarships to the following recipients:

Barbara Purvis Memorial Scholarship: Cody LeFleur.

Bill Bartlett Memorial Scholarship: Michelle Ware.

Bridget Bartlett Memorial Scholarship: Sarah Scalf.

Founders' Scholarship: Kevin Imes.

Fran Clemons ACT 4 Scholarships: David Leppert, Rebekah Leppert, Kelsey Plante, Tim Steis and Victoria Wells.

Harvey Klein Memorial Scholarship: Savannah Hirst.

Leon Schmehl Memorial Scholarship: Greg Hersey.

Susan and Randall Moring Scholarship: Zachary Titterington.

Johnny Mello Show

The Johnny Mello Show, which features seven local recording artists performing doo wop, rock 'n' roll and country music, will be held during the Spruce Creek Social Club's Pasta-Fest Aug. 10.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit Have A Heart For Companion Animals, Inc.

The event will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in Spruce Creek Community Center in Summerfield. There will be door prizes, 50-50 drawing, line dancing and more. Doors open at 5 p.m.

Advance tickets are $15 a person and include spaghetti and meatballs, salad, bread, tea and lemonade. Tickets are available at Audibel Hearing Centers in The Villages, Rainbow Bible & Book Store in Belleview or online at haveaheart.us or call 352-687-1776.

Participants may BYOB.

Participants are encouraged to bring a bag of dry dog or cat food, which will be donated to local rescue groups.
