Transaction cards giant, Austria Card, is scouting for more deals in the country in the wake of increased demand for plastic payment cards.

The cards maker enjoys a lucrative deal in banking industry supplying Equity Bank with over 5.5 million cards. Demand for plastic payment cards is rising in the banking, retail and transport sectors.

Head of marketing Igor Pejic did not divulge much on key target areas outside banking but gave the biggest hint at pitching to supply national digital identity cards. The Vienna-based company has bagged a fat contract in Rwanda to supply the government with multifunctional smart cards.

The cards have a "post-issuance capability", meaning new applications can be loaded onto the chip even after the card has been issued. The firm also supplies ID cards in Nigeria, Africa's biggest economy and most populous country.
