July 06--DANVILLE -- Local artist Tony Halchak took home two Independent Music Awards early in June, both for design work done on behalf of Pennsylvania rock band The Badlees.

Halchak's awards were for best poster design, created for Badlees album "Epiphones and Empty Rooms," and best T-shirt design, again created for the Badlees.

"I was pretty excited to just get nominated and very happy when I won," said Halchak, a graphic designer and illustrator with 10 years experience. "It's incredible to win both of the categories I was nominated for that had thousands of submissions from all over the world. Being a fan of legendary folk singer Pete Seeger it was also pretty cool to be in a class of winners that included him."

The awards offer him yearlong marketing and sales support, performance and licensing opportunities which help place in front of one billion music fans across the world.

Halchak has done design work for several northeast and central Pennsylvania bands and businesses over the years, including albums, posters, T-shirts and logos. He's recently started working on larger projects for companies like the U.S. Junior National Golf Team and watch-maker Jaermann & Stuebi, for which he created an illustration of a limited edition watch to be used in advertisements in Golf Magazine and Sports Illustrated.

Halchak moved to Danville two years ago, after growing up in the Wilkes-Barre area.

Artistically, he finds inspiration in old folk art and he prefers using negative space in a lot of his illustrations.

He has also been designing T-shirts that will be featured in scenes of an upcoming movie, "Trust Me."

Halchak also writes and performs his own music, which he describes as indie folk similar to artists such as Ray LaMontagne, Damien Rice, or David Gray.

"As a musician I continue to be inspired by Bruce Springsteen and other strong lyricists and a lot of the local musicians I get to play alongside and work with," he said.
