July 05--A work of art inspired by area residents' sketches featuring Summit County icons will be unveiled today at the John S. Knight Center in downtown Akron.

The "reveal" of the art -- a large mural on an interior wall of the convention center -- will be at 7:30 p.m. in conjunction with the free Downtown Akron Artwalk.

To see the unveiling, enter the Knight Center through the doors at 77 E. Mill St.

Doors will open for the event around 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

The mural -- called summitinspiration -- is the work of area painter and tattoo artist Jesse Strother, who last year worked with 14 Akron Public Schools high school students and others to design, draw and paint a mural on the side of the Angel Falls Coffee Shop, at 792 W. Market St. in the Highland Square neighborhood.

This time, Strother used sketches submitted by area residents at a series of "Make Your Mark" events organized by the Knight Center, Downtown Akron Partnership, Akron-Summit County Public Library and Summit Artspace. The idea was for the residents to sketch things representing what Summit County meant to them.

The mural -- painted with latex and acrylic paints -- is in the shape of Summit County and features images of blimps, Indian arrowheads, and polymer chains among other iconic graphics.

Strother is scheduled to be at today's event. To see pictures of some of the sketches, go to

The mural is the first work of art commissioned by the Akron Art Museum -- in collaboration with the other groups -- to be placed outside of the museum and its grounds.

The Artwalk -- running from 5 to 10 p.m. -- features more than two dozen destinations for art, shopping, dining and entertainment on the first Saturday of every month. The city of Akron's free trolley service runs the entire route.
