DOT MULLS NEW LICENCE FOR BROADBAND VIA CABLE

The Ministry of Telecom, Government of India, intends to launch a new category of licence to enable TV players and DTH operators to provide broadband services in the country. The new licence will be called Cable TV Internet Service Providers Licence. This will be part of the new broadband policy that is being formulated by the ministry. There are 100 Million cable TV connections in the country, out of which 20 Million are digitised. Additionally, there are about 56 Million DTH homes in the country. This has clearely overtaken the fixed line telephony subscriber base.
