July 31--An upcoming Mexican fiesta will provide much-needed help to many four-legged friends in Fort Smith.

The fifth annual PETropolitan benefit will be 6-10 p.m.Aug. 7 at The Blue Lion at UAFS Downtown, 101 N. Second St., and will dish up entertaining live music, food, live and silent auctions, various drinks and more for all of those attending, said Levada Luper, treasurer for the event.

"This will be an exciting event that will have margaraitas, beer and tons of great auction items," she said.

Set to benefit Kitties and Kanines, a local veterinary clinic that provides low-cost spay and neutering services for animals, the PETropolitan event will feature such live-auction items as a "Pasty, Passion and Pistols Murder Mystery Party," jewelry, box tickets for the 50th annual Academy of Country Music Awards, tickets to the Arkansas-Texas A&M game, trips and more, Luper said.

"We're also having Heavens 2 Betsy playing live music, and they are a young, local band that covers some contemporary country music and more," she said.

Golden Corral will provide food for the event, which drew about 200 people and raised $50,000 for Kitties and Kanines last year, Luper said.

"We're hoping at least 200 people attend this event; all pet-lovers are welcome," she said.

Money raised from the event will help support the low-cost spay and neutering of both domestic pets and stray animals at Kitties and Kanines, something that is "needed" in the community, Luper said.

"This event helps prolong the lives of the animals," she said. "This will help cut down on animal overpopulation and, hopefully one day, eliminate euthanasia of the animals. That's why PETropolitan is so important."
