July 31--ORLEANS -- Police are investigating a painting stolen from an Orleans art gallery Saturday afternoon.

The artist, who also owns the gallery, told police that her painting titled "Chickadee in Branches" went missing, said Police Chief Scott MacDonald.

The artist told police she thinks a couple, who spoke a foreign language, may be responsible for the theft.

They were in her gallery, which police would not name, on Saturday. The man spoke to her for a time, perhaps to distract her. Later, she noticed the painting was gone, MacDonald said.

The painting, valued at $900, is oil on wood, with no frame and about 18 inches tall.
