July 30--As part of The Tribune's coverage of the 2014 California Mid-State Fair, we're publishing a series of concert reviews. Below, Tribune sales manager Brittany Hensley reviews the Steve Miller Band and Journey concert.
Steve Miller Band opened for legendary rock band Journey on July 23 at the California Mid-State Fair in Paso Robles.
Doors to the Chumash Grandstand Arena opened at 6:45 p.m. with the band hitting the stage at 7:30 p.m. performing in front of an elaborate silver logo background that lit up to the sound of musical notes.
An active crowd on and off its feet sang and swayed to the tunes "Living in the U.S.A.," "Shu Ba Da Du Ma Ma Ma Ma" and "My Dark Hour." The band also performed "Abracadabra," "Wide River," "Cry Cry Cry," "Who Do You Love" and "I Want to Make the World Turn Around."
The Steve Miller Band played until 9 p.m., when intermission left time for the crowd to refill drinks, compare notes with other concertgoers on Steve Miller's performance and gear up for Journey to hit the stage.
At this point in the concert, the venue seemed about two-thirds full with the floor seats and main grandstand seats sold out. Bleacher seats next to the stage were about a third full with energetic concert goers trying to catch a glimpse of band members.
Journey opened the second half of the concert at 9:30 p.m. to a standing ovation from a roaring crowd featuring concertgoers of all ages. The younger generation sang along just as loudly as those that had seen Journey perform back in the day.
A number of light-up balls were dispersed out into the crowd to bat around, but the wind quickly whisked balls over the arena fence into the carnival area.
Playing until 11:30 p.m., Journey covered all the top hits, including "Don't Stop Believin'," "Faithfully" and "Any Way You Want It." The band also played "Open Arms," "Wheel In The Sky," "Feeling That Way," "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)," "Lights," "Stone In Love" and "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'."
Journey ended with one encore that left the crowd standing and celebrating another successful return performance at the fair.
