July 30--PITTSBURGH -- Just like his "Star Trek" character steering the USS Enterprise, George Takei ("Mr. Sulu") will helm a series of concerts starring the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
Takei will host and narrate the Pittsburgh Symphony PNC Pops' "Sci-Fi Spectacular" shows Nov. 14-16 at Heinz Hall. Single tickets go on sale Aug. 25, with season tickets for the PNC Pops available now at pittsburghsymphony.org or 412-392-4900.
Jack Everly will conduct the "Sci-Fi Spectacular" shows, featuring vocalist Kristen Plumley and music from "2001: A Space Odyssey," "Star Trek," "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" and other out-of-this-world movies/TV shows.
Widely recognized for his vocal talents, Takei has narrated shows for two dozen North American symphonies, including similar "Sci-Fi Spectaculars" for the Milwaukee, Toronto, Detroit and Cleveland orchestras.
Takei has kept busy in recent years as a social activist, star of Broadway's "Allegiance" and host of the AARP-produced YouTube series "Takei's Take," where he explores technology, trends, current events and pop culture. Mashable.com in 2012 reported Takei was the No. 1 most-influential person on Facebook, with more than 7.3 million likes.
