BRIEF: Oneonta police: Beware of utility scam on phone

July 30, 2014

The Daily Star, Oneonta, N.Y.

July 30--The City of Oneonta Police Department has received multiple reports of a scam in the area pertaining to payments due a utility.

Someone calling on the telephone claims to be a representative of New York State Electric and Gas Corp. and requests a credit card payment to satisfy a past-due account, police said in a Facebook posting Tuesday.

Police advised residents to tell such a caller that they will call back, then to call NYSEG directly using the numbers on a bill. No personal information, including credit card numbers, should be given over the telephone to anyone who cannot be positively identified, police said.

Requests for wired payments or money orders are a red flag to a scam, Lt. Douglas Brenner said. The department receives several complaints a week about telephone or Internet scams, he said.
